The Department of Medicine at CMH Quetta has a long history of being manned by physicians of repute. It is a pivotal department which carries the load of large number of patients from Balochistan as well as neighbouring parts of Afghanistan. It is the focal point of a wide range of clinical and academic services and is recognized for postgraduate, MCPS/FCPS training in medicine as well as house job training. The department manages a 10-bedded Intensive Care Unit/ Coronary Care Unit and a 30 bedded High Dependency Unit (HOU) in addition to 180 general medical beds in 6 medical wards for males and females. The department comprises Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Neurology and Nephrology.

The section of Internal Medicine coordinates the inpatient activities as well as outpatient consultation services. It provides specialized treatment in cases of infectious diseases, nutrition, general internal medicine, endocrinology, rheumatology etc. In hospital consultation services are provided to allied departments like Surgical, Gynaecology & Obstetrics both in ambulatory and inpatient settings.
The Critical Care Medicine at CMH Quetta is very well developed. Quetta because of its remote location necessitates a standalone facility, which this unit is quite capable of providing. The ICU is a very well equipped unit with facilities for management of all kinds of serious cases. All beds have Cardiac, NIBP and Oxymetric Monitoring. Facility for invasive arterial capnography, CVP Monitoring, arterial gas measurement and emergency pacemaking are available. The department has the capability to provide lifesaving ventilation facility for 10 patients simultaneously. Options for both invasive as well as non invasive ventilation like NIV, CPAP, BiPaP are also available. Bedside radiologic, ultrasound and echocardiographic assessment are done routinely in ICU.
Cardiology section provides complete and comprehensive care to patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The section utilizes a well developed Coronary Care Unit (CCU) for patients requiring intensive care and a Step-Down Unit (HNC) designed for cardiac patients requiring an intermediate level of care. Diagnostic services like Trans-thoracic Echocardiography (2D Echo), transesophageal echocardiography (TOE), exercise tolerance testing (ETT), and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and ECG (Holter) monitoring are available. A 64 slice CT scanner is available for diagnostic CT Angiography. Implantation of temporary cardiac pacemaker in emergency is possible in department.
Gastroenterology section caters to a large number of patients presenting to the outpatient clinics and emergency rooms. The section provides diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which include esophagogastroduodenoscopy, endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy, endoscopic band ligation, colonoscopy, polypectomies, electrocoagulation, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP), common bile duct stone extraction, etc.
The Pulmonology services manage patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, restrictive lung disease, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary tuberculosis and variety of infections, pleural effusion and other diseases of the chest. Diagnostic services include pulmonary function test (PFT), fibreoptic bronchoscopy, and high resolution CT scanning of chest. Intensive care management of patients requiring ventilation is done by this service.
The section of Neurology offers comprehensive specialty consultation in both outpatient and inpatient settings for management of congenital and acquired diseases of central and peripheral nervous system disorders. Hospital has facility of CT scan and MRI Scan as well as electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked potentials.
The Nephrology services caters to a large number of patients of acute and chronic kidney diseases, and is responsible for care of all patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The hospital has facilities for diagnostic renal biopsy, peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis. Haemodialysis is also available as an outdoor service at a well equipped haemodialysis centre.
